Bureaucracy
What values associated with the World War I Cultural Matrix do we as a society and culture still value? Which ones may have gone by the wayside? Be specific with your examples.
Well, I think the values of freedom and individuality are among the most important values that are still a part of our society and culture today. It is evident through our country's laws and constitution that we value freedom very much and in addition, in our country we respect the individuality of people. In our society we respect (for the most part/and are tolerant-for the most part) of everyone...both as indiviuals and as a group. And, as far as, deciding which values are no longer a part of our society-that is somewhat hard to tell, because to a certain extent (atleast), I think, that most, if not all, of the values can be applied in some way/aspect to current culture/society.
In terms of Bureaucracy Values, we still value freedom, expertise, individuality, and predictability. We value freedom because we always make references to the liberties stated in the constitution when things go awry, expertise because bosses of today would prefer an applicant with more experience than one with less experience, individuality because we are becoming more creative and expressive, and predictability because we always want to know what is coming so we make assumptions. Because individuality is emerging, conformity is fading away. People, especially young people, tend to try to do things differently than the older generations.
The values associated with World War I that are still viewed today are Freedom, Individuality, and predictability. We still values freedom because it is one of the bills of rights. We live in a free nation, were we have the freedom of speech, religion, petition, press and assembly. We are very proud of this value. We also have the value of individuality because are individuals that live on our own and take care of ourselves. We value predictability because we are always making predictions of the future. How it will be in 20 years, how to make a better world for the next generation, the list goes on and on. I think all the values of World War I are still used today in many different ways, they never really go away.
The values of the World War 1 cultural matrix that are still seen today are freedom, individuality, conformity, expertise, and predictability. Of course freedom would be the first one because that's something that we as society still value and cherish. We have the freedom to do and say what we want. Being an individual is still important but conformity is still seen in society today. There's conformity when it comes to fashion and how one might live their lives due to not wanting to think outside the box and go against the status quo. Some people rather conform then to be an individual and stick to what they truly believe. In terms of expertise, when you apply for a job it is best that experience in whatever field you apply for. The person in chargeof hiring would more than likely appreciate an individual with experience rather than an amateur. In terms of predictability, it is seen as "safe" by some people because they rather not be living in uncertainty. I think that collective, and amateur have faded away.
Values from the World war one culural matrix that are still seen today are predictability, conformity and expertise. As a capitalist society our economy and way of life have always depended on the business world. Success in the business world equals the ability to market to produce, market and sell a product and by doing so generate profit. This way of life would be impossible if chaos dissorder and unpredictability were values we held dear.
I believe that values associated with WWI cultural maxtrix are freedom, individuality, conformity, expertise, and predictability. How we act daily is an example of these values. We express ourselves the way we want because we are granted liberties and certain rights through the constitution. Expertise is more seen in the professional areas of business and education. We all want highly educated and accountable people to work in with our business. Everyday somebody is conforming to a certain style and religion. I among most tend to jump on the bandwagon and do whatever everybody else does. Predictability because we all know that history repeats itself. Everything that has happened is the result of something else that happened before. WE know what's going to happen next.
I think that the American society still wants and needs to believe that all or most of the organic values are present in the society. Freedom is the main value that the America was founded upon and many groups within our society are constantly fighting for more freedom and expression of their rights. I believe that the value of individuality is extremely valued in our society except when the majority of the society feels that it has become potentially harmful to others or the society as a whole. I am not sure that many of the values of motion are supported within the American society. The value of control is highly fought against in American society. When one group or company begins to gain too much control over the nation or their area of expertise the society begins to ban together and form a backlash against that group or company
One of the values that is still present in our society is freedom. I think no matter what era or what century it is I think we will still enjoy the freedom we have. Another value that is still present today is expertise. I think we all value some expertise; we want to be good at something, or hire someone who is good at something. And predictability, we want to know what is going to happen. We want to be able to predict our future and make choices according to our predictions.
In today’s society, we can still see the values of freedom over control and expertise from the World War 1 Cultural Matrix. Freedom has always been a fundamental part of the United States. Our country was built on the principle of liberty. Our freedom is an absolute right protected by the First Amendment. The First Amendment gives us the ability to freely express our thoughts and opinions. Furthermore, the First Amendment entitles us to freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. If our right to freedom and liberty were not protected by the Constitution, we would not be able to make our own decisions about matters that affect our lives. We also continue to value expertise. Expertise is an essential part of viewing society as a machine. Expertise can be seen through the operation of today’s factories. The workers who operate the machines have the skill and capability of manufacturing products, such as clothes.
In response to Lisa. I agree with you when you say that we value individualism. We pride ourselves on being able to be accountable for our actions and our personality. I also agree with you when you say that we make predicions of the future and how we can better our economy and our environment. All of us can see that the values associated with WW1 cultural matrix are evident in today's society. We all have mutual understandings on how we see them.
I agree with Erica on the fact that conformity is still seen today when it comes to fashion, style, and religion. That whole "jump on the bandwagon" is still a concept that people still act out. I agree with everyone on the fact that expertise is still important today because a boss of a company is looking for the best applicant, the appilcant with the most experience (expertise) to hire and represent their company to the fullest. I agree with those who said predictability is a value still seen today. Mainly because we as people are driven by wanting to know what will happen next and when. I agree with Erica how history repeats itself so therefore we already know what's going to happen next; same story, different characters. In closing, freedom will continue to be important majority of us have stated that it is a value still seen today.
I think we still value individuality. Just look at how we choose our own lifestyles as far as religion their are many different religions practiced in America for example. I think we as a society are still very predictable like with the economy going haywire the stock market was doomed to go bad which is a diret result of predictable panic by us. The value that is most present today still is the value of freedom we want freedom of oppression and the press and to pursue happiness however someone chooses to pursue it thats why their was so much controversy over proposition 8
I agree with Stephanie that our country was built on the principle of liberty/freedom. It is clearly stated in the first amendment and it gives us the ability to freely express our thoughts and opinions. I also agree that we value expertise, I didn’t write in my comment because I wasn’t sure we did, but now I see we do value it. Expertise is an essential part of viewing society as a machine, and that is what the bureaucracy period was all about. We see it now in our society because workers operate machines but before they do, they must go through training to work with the machines and have the skills and capability to do so.
I agree with Lisa! I totally see where she gets her views and the point she made about the value of predictability is one I had not thoroughly thought about she says that, "because we are always making predictions of the future. How it will be in 20 years, how to make a better world for the next generation, the list goes on and on," the value of predictability is visible in our culture/society today and that is true...it seems almost as thought we live in tomorrow everyday. The news spends much of their time predicting tomorrows politics, and how the money market will be tomorrow and how the weather will be, etc. The same for families and workers, and students whom do the things they do based on what tomorrow might bring...so, in that case...I agree with Lisa because the value of predictablity is very evident. :)
I agree Kene that the main values from World War One that are still present are freedom, expertise, predictability and individuality. I believe that our society is becoming more excepting on the expressing of one’s individuality and self. Many people are more open to diversity in every aspect of life and appreciate it. This understand of the importance of individuality is what makes our society stand out. I’m not sure that our generation does things that much different than older generations. Our generation is definitely more reliant on technologies but I believe that we still share the same basic values.
I agree with Kimesha's explanation about how conformity is still being seen today when people try to maintain the status quo. I stated earlier that conformity seems to be giving way to individuality, but after seeing Kimesha's comment I think that individuality is indeed emerging, but conformity is not really fading away.
Justin Downing said that conformity is a value we still hold true, i disagree.Ithink we are very individualistic society. Predictability is a value we hold true today because we are creatures of habit who don't like change. Unpredicability would cause chaos in the world. Yes when busines is succesful we all succced. I think though that are attempt to be the best capitalistic society has caused us alot of trouble because our greed has consumed alot of us. Corruption in the industry has caused ost of the economic meltdown we have seen as of late.
